Ukazał się wreszcie mój referat o historii chińskich sukienek cheongsam (qipao) jako postkonferencyjny artykuł w tomie Strój - zwierciadło kultury. Polecam jednak także pozostałe artykuły gdyż są interesujące - poruszają bowiem zagadnienia nie tylko mody dawnej, historycznej ale też teraźniejszej oraz pod katem geograficznym.  Appeared to finally my paper about the history of Chinese cheongsam dresses (cheongsam) as  article in  Costume - a mirror of culture. I would recommend, however, also other articles as they are interesting - because the issue is not only the historical fashion, but also of modern fashion. 

Sukienki cheongsam to jedne z moich ulubionych, które noszę a są mocno związane ze stylem vintage czy polskim retro. Nie jestem skłonna uważać ubiór za dzieło sztuki - ale wyjątkiem są dla mnie właśnie te sukienki. Nigdy żadna z nich się nie powtarza a chińscy krawcy i hafciarze doprowadzili ją do perfekcji. Popularność zdobyła dzięki Anglikom rezydującym w Szanghaju, później chińskiej emigracji w Hongkongu. Zdobyły uznanie także dzięki znanej książce Richarda Masona - Świat Suzie Wong i .... stały się symbolem pań lekkich obyczajów. Nie mniej noszone także przez elity i kręgi polityczne jak zony dyplomatów - w te sposób moda ta docierała do innych krajów. Dziś można je kupić na rynku jak i w domach haute couture.

Cheongsam dresses are some of my favorites that I wear and are strongly associated with the style of vintage I'm not inclined to dress for a work of art - but except for me is these dresses. Do none of them is not repeated and Chinese tailors and embroiderers brought it to perfection. Famous for its Englishmen residing in Shanghai, China later in exile in Hong Kong. Also gained recognition thanks to well-known book by Richard Mason - The World of Suzie Wong and .... became a symbol of the ladies of easy virtue. No less worn also by the elites and political circles as wives of diplomats - in the way of fashion this reaches other countries. Today, you can buy them on the market as well as haute couture houses.

Tym razem o modzie jak to dzisiaj modnie się określa "vintage" co do lat 1920 - 1940 jakoś nie pasuje przynajmniej dla mnie. Zaczytuję się ostatnio w biografiach kobiet, książki które dostarczają mi sporo wiedzy w zakresie kostiumologii. O biografii Heleny Rubinstein wiele już napisano i skomentowano. Dla mnie to wspaniała książka napisana pięknym językiem dostarczająca wielu cenny informacji kulturowych tego czasu. Madame Rubinstein ubierała się u wielu znanych dyktatorów mody jedną z nich była ekscentryczna Włoszka - Elsa Schiaparelli. Na okładce książki polskiego wydania widać zdjęcie portretowe bohaterki w sukni, którą znajduje się w Metropolitan Museum w Nowym Yorku. Po dokładnym obejrzeniu zdjęcia wydaje mi się iż jest to ta sama suknia wieczorowa chociaż samo muzeum nie wspomina o jej proweniencji. Nawet jeśli nie należała do Heleny jest nie zwykła. Pochodzi z kolekcji jesiennej pamiętnego roku 1939 i jak opisuje je na stronie muzeum nawiązuje do kosmosu i astrologii. A tu Madam w sukni z tej kolekcji ( albo w tej samej). I jak tu nie oprzeć się wrażeniu, że ubrania mogą "mówić"?

This post is about the vintage  fashion .

Now, I read the biography of Helena Rubinstein lot has been written and commented. For me it is a wonderful book written in beautiful language that provides many valuable cultural information then. Madame Rubinstein dressed in many well-known fashion dictators one of them was an eccentric Italian designer - Elsa Schiaparelli. The Polish edition of the book cover shows a portrait heroine in a dress, which is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. After carefully watching the pictures it seems to me that this is the same dress, although the museum itself makes no mention of its provenance.  It comes with a collection of memorable autumn of 1939, and as described by them on the museum refers to the cosmos and astrology. And here, Madam in the dress of the collection (or the same).

Rzadko kiedy piszę tutaj o strojach współczesnych, które szyję dla siebie. Na początku tego roku zaczęłam szyć spódnicę inspirowaną modą lat dwudziestych XX wieku. Ma być do noszenia na co dzień dziś lub na wyjścia. Sportowa ale ciepła i wygodna. Zainspirowała mnie spódnica autorki bloga The House Lars Built. Zdjęcia od razu skierowały moje myśli na wzór spódnicy zamieszony we  Świecie z 1922 roku. I taki wzór właśnie wybrałam. Materiał to kupiony w second handzie resztka angielskiej wełny granatowej w białe prążki. Spódnicę tylko zszyłam i zebrałam w pasie w dużych 4 plisach na które naszyłam wzór z poziomych pasów wg wzoru. Posiada także podszewkę. Dekorację stanowią guziki, które chciałam sama wykonać ale zabrakło mi materiału, więc na razie zastąpiłam je zabawnymi guzikami w kształcie dziewczęcej główki w stylu nawiązującej do lat 20 stych ( mam tylko dwa dlatego są tylko z przodu) jest to tymczasowe rozwiązanie. W oryginalnym projekcie jest trochę zmian, pionowe panele wystają poza brzeg spódnicy ja jest skróciłam. Całość szyta zarówno ręcznie jak i maszynowo.

At the beginning of the year this year I started to sew a skirt inspired by the fashion of the twenties of the twentieth century. I wanted to wear for my lectures or wear for every day It is sporty, warm and comfortable

  I was inspired by the author's skirt blog The House Lars Built.  

Photos immediately sent a my thoughts on design skirt from the Polish magazine Świat from 1922. The material is bought in the second hand. I is of the English wool navy blue with white stripes. Skirt only sewed and gathered at the waist in a large 4 tucks which even made pattern of horizontal stripes. Skirt has decoration with button and linning. I wanted to do buttons of the same fabric but I haven't any scrap of these material so now I decorated with buttons (only two in front) with girl's head.

Woman's fashion magazines and some books

I collected fashion magazines, mostly Polish. Some of them with patterns. Most popular Polish magazine which contein fashion supplement about craft and sewing was Bluszcz. Bluszcz edited in Warsaw in 1865 - 1939. You can some of annuals to see and download from here.

Some others magazines which included paterns were : Kobieta w Świecie i w domu. (Woman in the Word and at Home).

Another magazine included fashion news was Świat ( The World)

And one I have French fashion magazine: Modes et Travaux.

Lately I often come back to read book form my costume bookshelf. One of these which I like is catalog from wonderful exhibition from Sopot near Gdansk about Fashion and Livestyles on the Beach on the Baltic See in XIX th century and first quarter of XX th century; Modna pani u wód. Kąpieliska nad Bałtykiem 1880-1914. If you interested in of beach costume you can to buy book on here. My second book is about traveled womans and here is some about travel costume. Vintage belt brooche.

Last year I bought two vintage belt brooche on the old Dominican Faire in Gdansk. Brooche was very damaged but my father renovated it. I suppose that is the 20 thies style like Egiptomania" in fashion. It was made in Czechoslovakia. Green stones ( plastic?) seems like leather snake. On the brim shows the head of snake. In the centre and between head of snake are the turquoise.
